Chapter 7

Chloe drove to May's and she picked her mother up so that they could go to the design center and other smaller shops together, to look for art decor for the governor's mansion. May hadn't seen much of Chloe, and Chloe wanted to spend some time with her mother.

They started in a small boutique shop with specialty items, looking through them all and, as her mother liked to put it, “treasure hunting.” May loved looking for all of the possible treasures they could leave with, but she was most interested in how her daughter was doing with her pregnancy, and the growth of her grandbaby.

"How've you been feeling? Did the doctor tell you that you might get morning sickness?" May asked Chloe as they moved along slowly through the store.

"Oh, I'm okay, Mama. I have had a couple of days when I haven't felt very good, but for the most part, it's been really easy, so it's nothing I'm worried about yet, but I will be careful so if I do get sick, I can talk to the doctor about what to eat or what to do for it." She had a way of allaying her mother's fears, it came from a lifetime of growing up with her.

"Are you eating healthy? You know, that baby is going to take every nutrient it needs right from you and leave you lacking, so all the supplements, vitamins, and healthy food you eat is mostly to replenish your own need for them. Did you know that?" she asked, looking over the top of her glasses at her daughter as she stood there holding a vase in her hands.

"Yes, Mama. I did do a lot of research about the pregnancy beforehand, but it's always helpful to get thoughtful suggestions and tips. Thank you so much." She smiled at her mother.

May nodded and smiled back and a few minutes later she looked at Chloe and asked her, "What have you been doing lately? You've been so busy that I hardly get to see you and talk to you anymore. I haven't seen you since you brought that chicken soup over to the house. It was delicious, by the way, what on earth did you do to get the noodles that way?"

Chloe laughed at her mother's winding road questions. She often asked more than one question at a time, and they didn't always have to do with the same subject. "I'm glad you liked the soup, Mama. The noodles were homemade. I have a recipe. I'll come over and show you how to do it. As far as being busy..." she had not mentioned Lucas to her mother at all up to that point. "I have been seeing a guy in my building. He's a nice guy."

"What does he do?" May asked lightly, looking at her daughter intently.

Chloe knew the barrage of questions was coming, but what she didn't know, was how her mother would react to her having a boyfriend who didn't know she was pregnant.
